A Woven Urban Fabric
Concept: Project involves the creation of a unique site surveying tool/ prototype to digitally collect information from the site explored. Information collection process is then replicated in another prototype which translates the digital data obtained from the immediate environment into a physical output that is grounded in context.
Themes: (1) Circular economy and sustainability as it takes into account the temporal nature of the information collected through the designed prototype. (2) Reuse and recyclability, where a deconstruct-able ‘weave’ architecture with a frame that can be manipulated by the public is designed to reflect the temporal needs of the site. (3) Translate hidden digital data which is captured through the site-surveying prototype and reflective of urban fabric into a physical and interactive design intervention.

Design inspired from narrow alleyways of the city and the history behind them as ‘negative’ spaces molded by the surrounding infrastructure and dense urban fabric

Prototype created for site surveying textural richness and ambiance of tight alleyways at various heights. A light sensor and two ultrasound sensors were placed on either ends of a headphone to capture data as surveyor wearing it walks across the center of the alleyway. The device was then placed on an extendable pole to capture data at different heights at 0.5m intervals, starting at 0m and reaching 3m
Graphs depict variations of light intensity recorded at different heights (Left-most depicts highest point - 3m - and right-most depicts lowest point - 0m). Above them are the corresponding ultrasound readings attained at that height which are visualized as extruded walls.

Illustration depicts visualizations of data extracted from the prototype at different heights of a select alleyway overlaid

Plan showing the creation process of a prototype which translated the data extracted into a physical output. Plan is a scaled down version of one of the alleyways investigated.

Constructed prototype and plan of its output at different light levels where distance at which thread is dispensed from the edge is dependent on light reading. Video of its operation is present in ‘Other’ page

Plan and section exploring spaces which can be created and occupied by a scaled-up version of the prototype which is used to house the stalls of temporary farmer markets

Frame system can be manipulated by people who can place the poles in different areas of the site to create a new pattern of spatial divisions
