Arts Library: Incorporating Symbolism Amidst Functioncality
Concept: Design brief centers around developing a flexible, inclusive environment accommodating a Music and Arts Library in Valencia. Developed architectural quality aims to act as a platform which reflects contemporary community’s needs and enables the sharing of local knowledge and culture to global communities without limiting immediate community’s future growth.
Themes: (1) Manipulating transition between public and private spaces; (2) Establishing intimate/ private spaces of reading rooms within open, public spaces; (3) Translating symbolic journey to knowledge into physical realm through spatial sequencing and use of light - library is inspired by Sainte-Geneviève Library by Henri Labrouste (1851).
Design centers around symbolic journey to knowledge and concept of nature as a central force/ source of inspiration thus emphasis is placed on circulation and hierarchy of spaces
Site analysis, with a focus on (1) circulation (analyze relation between indoor/ outdoor and sheltered/ open spaces); (2) light and how it can be reflected/ emphasized through architectural form; and (3) materiality to establish a connection to wider context

Private reading room physical and digital models. Reading rooms where knowledge can be taken in without distraction is viewed and placed at the central point of the library where outdoor views of the courtyards and the greenery within it is reserved to these spaces alone.
